The SDS
Story.
In 1964,
Colleen Stewart opened the Colleen Stewart School of Dance in a small hall at the Papakura Army Camp, with only a handful of students.
In the early 70s,
Colleen's husband John built a single garage-sized dance studio, next to their home in Papakura.
Their two children, Kim and Dean, were now also dancing.
From the mid to late 1980s,
Colleen was holding classes in the Elizabeth Campbell Hall, the Takanini Hall, and a leased studio in East Street in Papakura.
In the 1990s,
Colleen's daughter Kim started teaching, and the studio changed its name to Stewart Dance Studios.
Group competition work was also taken to a new level.
The 2000s,
Colleen sadly passed away, which saw Kim take over as studio director.
Our Performing Groups continued to have the opportunity to travel overseas.
2020 and beyond,
We can't wait to see what the future of Stewart Dance Studios brings!
